Skopje, July 2025 — The Roma Leadership Program (RLP) has officially concluded its first training module, marking a significant step in building a new generation of empowered Roma professionals who are ready to lead with vision, courage, and strategic focus.
Designed to equip young Roma changemakers with the tools needed to influence policy, build networks, and advance equity from within, the program brought together participants from across Europe for an intensive experience blending theory, reflection, and community.
One of the standout voices in this first module is Alen Umer, a respected educator, advocate, and Roma youth leader from North Macedonia.

Why I Joined RLP – Alen Umer’s Motivation
“I joined the Roma Leadership Program to transform my grassroots experience into systemic change. For years, I’ve worked directly with Roma communities—teaching our language, advocating for youth, and challenging discrimination. But real progress requires strategic leadership. Through RLP, I want to deepen my skills in policy design, coalition-building, and advocacy to scale up local solutions across Europe. This isn’t just about personal growth; it’s about equipping myself to dismantle barriers holding our communities back.”
Looking Ahead: A Vision Rooted in Empowerment
“I expect RLP to be a catalyst—connecting me with mentors who’ve navigated similar challenges and peers who share this vision. The masterclass and internship will help me bridge the gap between activism and institutional leadership. Long-term, I aim to influence educational policies that center Roma voices and create platforms for young leaders like myself to lead with confidence. This program is a step toward a future where Roma aren’t just included but are architects of the systems that shape our lives.”
